Between Earth and Sky
Short is the little time which remains to thee of life.
Live as on a mountain.
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Mountains are for winds,
That shake not, though they blow perpetually.
- William Shakespeare
Come live with me, and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove,
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountains yields.
- Christopher Marlowe, 1564 - 1593
A path is a prior interpretation of the
best way to traverse a landscape.
— Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust: A History of Walking
My father considered a walk among the mountains
as the equivalent of church going.
- Aldous Huxley
Horses make a landscape look beautiful.
- Alice Walker
We are the children of our landscape; it dictates behavior and even thought in the measure to which we are responsive to it.
- Lawrence Durrell
A fine landscape is like a piece of music;
it must be taken at the right tempo.
- Paul Scott Mowrer
‘I am watching you — are you watching yourself in me?’
To tune in, without reverence, idly — but with real inward attention…
You can extract the essence of a place once you know how.
If you just get as still as a needle, you’ll be there.

“Are you watching yourself in me?” That is how I want to share nature with nature. That level of respect – that knowing that lies waiting – that willingness of nature to accept me and hold the mirror.
Your work is superb, Steve.

Dear Steve,
Your body of work is so infinite and wonderful, that dozens of good photographers could take hundred of years to gather.
So many unique shots at the decisive moment in harsh and even dangerous environments that undoubtly places you as my favorite documentary photographer of the century. You’re amazing! Thanks!

I have read Durrell’s Spirit of Place. Looking at your pictures made the spirit more palpable.

Beautiful pictures. Beautiful words. IN these images the landscape has taken the photographer, rather than the photographer taking the lanscape.

Caro Sr Steve
lindas fotos, parecem poesias
abraços do Brazil

Balanced, poetic, perfectly carved. A poem.

Nice to see your landscape photos Steve but in your landscapes also you have used human element as scale ! That is really great ! Is the photo of Taj Mahal is unpublished ? This view is really excellent ! The reflection and the crow has created magic in this picture ! Excellent.
