Outsiders
Refugee Camp, Peshawar, Pakistan
While every refugee’s story is different and their anguish personal,
they all share a common thread of uncommon courage:
the courage not only to survive,
but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives.
- Antonio Guterres
I know how men in exile feed on dreams.
- Aeschylus
Recognize yourself in he and she who are not like you and me.
― Carlos Fuentes
God dances with the outcast.
– Steven James
The majority of Americans, who are comparatively well-off,
have developed an ability to have enclaves of people living in the greatest
misery almost without noticing them.
- Gunnar Myrdal
The search for a scapegoat is the easiest of all hunting expeditions.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
War’s toll is etched on the faces at a shelter for the mentally ill in Kabul.
Seek Love …
In the darkness of night and the winter’s snow,
In the naked and outcast, seek Love there!
- William Blake
In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast.
Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that
without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis.
- Quentin Crisp
Being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty.
- Mother Teresa
The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children.
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
On members of the faithful:
They receive the wretched. They take strangers into their houses.
They comfort the sad. They lend to the needy. They clothe the naked.
They share their bread with the hungry. They do not turn their face from the poor.
This is the kind of brotherhood we teach.
Menno Simons (1496 – 1561) Founder of the Mennonites
Hazaras have long been seen as outsiders in Afghan society,
routinely subject to discrimination, and set apart by both their features and their Shiite religion,
in a land where the majority practice the Sunni faith.

Good afternoon, Mr McCurry…Your pics from Afghanistan are absolutelly wonderful!!!! I think it is great you can still, after so many hours, days, years, countries, histories…be able to go deep inside the inner history of the people…I think it is great you can personalize horror and misery and dreams in their eyes, remembering us there are persons behind the titles of the magazines, or even behind their silence….
I love the portreit of the Old Afghan, with all his dignity…
Thanks a lot again!
June 1, 2012 at 15:30
Beautiful, Steve, you have such a way with people, or with the right moment. You’ve captured their desolation so eloquently. Such sadness everywhere.
I’d love to know more about the shot of the beggar lady in Kabul with the shadows on the wall. It’s an amazing shot!

Thank you so much for being out there in the global mix! I just discovered your blog and I appreciate it so much. Last night I googled Afganistan because I wanted to see some pics of Pastun Warriors and this is where I ended up. The quotes are wonderful. I’m a new fan, I’m signed in and I look forward to traveling with you. I like the way you juxopose images to tell the truth without being cynical. Like a good Haiku poem. Thanks again!

Tent Cities are cropping up all over the U.S. How about doing a side-by-side picture of a Tent City in Bangledesh so that Americans can see what’s happening now. Send it to a U.S. magazine that you know will take your pictures. Middle Class America is disappear here … but most Middle and upper-middle Class are in denial about this Poverty is now very common in the U.S. and growing rapidly now.

Mr. Mc Curry, you are my favorite photographer because in all your portraits and street-life pictures you are able to express the feelings of people, simply through their eyes. Thank you very much because with your pictures you show me the World.
You are my mentor and I hope in future to become a good photographer like you.
