Fun and Games
If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed
himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become
unstable without knowing it.
- Herodotus
The true object of all human life is play.
Earth is a task garden.
Heaven is a playground.
- G . K. Chesterton
You must invent your own games and
teach us old ones how to play.
- Nikki Giovanni
You can discover more about a person in an
hour of play than in a year of conversation.
- Plato
In play a child always behaves beyond his average age, above his daily behavior.
In play it is as though he were a head taller than himself.
- Lev Vygotsky
People tend to forget that play is serious.
- David Hockney
Play is the exultation of the possible.
- Martin Buber
A child loves to play not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
- B. Spock, M.D.
Play is a uniquely adaptive act,
not subordinate to some other adaptive
act, but with a special function of its own
in human experience.
- Johan Huizinga

Elliott Erwitt, Magnum Photographer, in his studio, Central Park West, NYC, USA
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love these photos. The picture of the bikini-clad woman talking to the parka-clad man in Russia outside a hot spring brings back fond memories of Alaska where I have seen the same scene.

This is exceptional.
Many of Steve McCurry’s images really capture a unique moment, but it is often a pensive, serious and contemplative moment.
So it is refreshing to see him point his camera at those joyful moments of fun and relaxation in which many people show their true self. And the beauty of it is that those show that “people’s true self” is the same all over the world.

“To leave the world a bit better,’ oh yes, that is a great attitude to have! The opening image can get no better; the Lebanon photo speaks volumes and is so very powerful; my favorite is the elegant swing moment shutter frozen at the right time in India.
Thank you for sharing. Z
