Wall to Wall
Home is any four walls that enclose the right person.
- Helen Rowland
Walls enclose us, exclude us
Keep us in, keep us out
Listen
Watch
Give testimony, bear witness
I was here.
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!
- Langston Hughes
Celebration at the fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany
“There are four kinds of people in the world…
Those who build walls.
Those who protect walls.
Those who breach walls.
And those who tear down walls.
Much of life is discovering who you are.
― P.S. Baber, Cassie Draws the Universe
Afghanistan
“OK” indicates that landmines have been cleared
One of the most ancient forms of folk art is the handprint, a decorative mark that
I have photographed on walls in many parts of the world. In this house the
wood-panelled walls are covered with a series of roughly applied impressions of family members’ handprints.
Walls are the publishers of the poor.
- Eduardo Galeano
The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls …
- Paul Simon
Every wall is a door.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
…Before I built a wall I’d ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn’t
love a wall …
- Robert Frost
A world without walls is the only sustainable world. . . .
If the world is dominated by people who believe that their races,
their religions, their ethnic differences are the most important factors,
then a huge number of people will perish in this century.
- President Bill Clinton

Dear Mr. McCurry, the picture taken in Kamdesh, Afghanistan is a true piece of poignant story telling, thoughtful and revolting in a sightful. Thank you for giving this to the world.

I love all your photos., each one.
However I do not agree :”Every wall is a door. by Ralph Waldo Emerson”. There are walls which definitely separate..
September 4, 2012 at 19:43
Dear Mr McCurry…My knowledge of things does not allow me to distinguish if a pic is digital, or film…But I do not think this is the important thing…You can have a Leica, you can use a wonderful digital machine…It is useless if you do not have the eye …And the capacity to share what you see…And the ability and pacience to look for the correct quote to match the image…And this is what you have…And this is what I really enjoy….Thanks a lot…

I like the way of photography of mccurry
September 4, 2012 at 16:52
Some of these are film as can been seen from the context and year they were taken and some are digital. Either way, a master of his craft.
September 4, 2012 at 16:34
Hi Steve. Your photos are great as always. But is that a Sony digital camera you’re holding at the Great Wall? I’ve always been under the (unconfirmed) impression that you shot film.
September 4, 2012 at 16:30
I keep seeing photos from you with hand prints on walls. Do you have enough for a series of them? They are great as always from you. Anyway, I always look forward to seeing these collections.
September 4, 2012 at 16:19

“…And first of all, put down the walls you built around your heart.
Even if you built them to protect yourself against the pain of loss a loved one,
they are useless…
At the end, they are still walls and don´t allow the love to come in again
Instead be courageous…”

September 4, 2012 at 14:54
Wonderful insight………Steve…!!! What is a Wall……what does it keep out….or for that reason….keep out??? The Good or Bad….or Right or wrong?
How does it differ from a Window…..? Or a Door for that matter????
Always…..a delight to look at your images!!!!
Kind regards!
