the light and dark which that thing provides.

We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows,

Kabul, Afghanistan, 2002, AFGHN-10156. Beggar and shadow. On this particular day in Kabul, McCurry found a beggar women seeking charity outside a mosque. The ominous shadows of the buildings and passers-by convey a sense of intense isolation. It is a scene that has a changed little over the years. 'Every time I've returned,' McCurry recalls, 'I have found the same woman, begging by the same door.'
